Goodreads: Where love is your only escape ….

1911: Inside an asylum at the edge of the Yorkshire moors, where men and women are kept apart by high walls and barred windows, there is a ballroom vast and beautiful. For one bright evening every week they come together and dance. When John and Ella meet it is a dance that will change two lives forever.

Set over the heatwave summer of 1911, the end of the Edwardian era, THE BALLROOM is a tale of unlikely love and dangerous obsession, of madness and sanity, and of who gets to decide which is which.

My Review: Thank you to Netgalley, Random House Publishing and Anna Hope for the opportunity to read this ARC.

What a truly beautiful love story. The escape it give me from reality was a journey I would jump at a chance to go on again and again. The story flows so smoothly I was lost in it. Just like the ballroom in the novel, the release of emotion leaves everything else forgotten.

Although a love story, The Ballroom based in an asylum does give way to quite some difficult reading. There is no detracting from the actual true nature of the asylum in terms of what goes on behind closed doors as well as the mental state and welfare of the patients. In this sense the nature of reading is quite hard to swallow, however the love story at the forefront takes you away from that negativity.

Anna Hope has written a novel that gives hope to those who feels no such thing can ever exist. Truly stunning.

About the Author: Anna Hope is an English writer and actress from Manchester. She is perhaps best known for her Doctor Who role of Novice Hame. She was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, and Birkbeck College, London. Anna’s powerful first novel, WAKE, sold to Transworld Publishers in a seven-way auction. Set over the course of five days in 1920, WAKE weaves the stories of three women around the journey of the Unknown Soldier, from its excavation in Northern France to Armistice Day at Westminster Abbey. US rights were pre-empted by Susan Kamil at Random House. The book will be published in Doubleday hardback in early 2014. For more information about Anna Hope, visit her website.
